PROJECT “PANORAMA GARDEN – Changing Map, Melting Landscape –”

Under the title PANORAMA GARDEN, which remains the same since 2016, The Nagoya Port area continues to function as a garden where artists and artworks make interventions to change its landscape.
In 2018-2019, over two years as a project-in-progress, we explore the phases of the Nagoya Port area moving onto the future, having ‘map’ and ‘landscape‘ as keywords.

Alongside its signifying aspect to indicate the present location, “Map” also has a function to archive the changes of land.
It has been three years since Assembridge NAGOYA was inaugurated, and the landscape of the Nagoya Port area never stopped transforming during this period. Many trades have ceased their businesses and empty houses are being demolished. Although new buildings are also erected, empty lots and abandoned houses are increasing and the townscape keeps changing.

The collectively-run space UCO (former Sushi Bar Ushio), which has been serving as a hub for social circle in the town since its opening in 2016 led by the artist unit L PACK., the window gallery Botão Gallery, which is a renovated ex-haberdashery constantly holding exhibitions from 2015, and the adjacent exhibition space “Tsumugi” (former Kimono Make-over Shop Izumiya), are all to be closed in October, and will be demolished by the end of 2018.

While accepting such changes in the town, we take actions to develop long-term, art-based projects as a medium and a platform to record and think those transformations. This year, by focusing on the trajectory of “UCO”, we present records and changes of the activity and explore how we could potentially continue such exercises. Also, a selection of previous works and some fragments of project-in-progress of the participating artists are introduced, prior to the presentation of their new works scheduled in 2019.
